Course fees

The instructional fee for each student per class session is $22.

My small-group model:

  • Research shows that children often learn modern/spoken languages best in peer group settings.  Having a cohort also takes some of the intensity and pressure off, which kids sometimes experience in 1:1 classes.
  • being able to practice speaking with a small group of peers motivates learning and keeps it fun!

College Preparation Saves Money:

  • Parents can save thousands of dollars in future tuition for students who can later “test out” or “test up” into university of language classes.  As a price comparison for learning French now, before college, versus waiting, these are the current, per-class price comparisons at two sample universities:

$37 per class session at the University of Kentucky in-state rate, which serves as a large public university comparison

$239 per class session at the University of Notre Dame, which serves as a medium-sized, private school comparison

  • In most universities (including the two examples above) these classes are taught by M.A. students (often in their 1st year, so essentially their qualification is a B.A. degree).
  • In addition, French class sizes in universities often permit 20-30 students per class!

My max class size is six students, creating a very low student to teacher ratio. This ensures that your child gets opportunities to participate and receives attention and feedback during each class.

As a final point to consider, starting young is important because research shows that kids learn language better, compared to waiting until adulthood/college!

 

French for HomeSchoolers Program Cost breakdown:

Administrative fee: $110 per semester, which includes monthly parent meetings so that you receive personalized feedback about your child’s progress

Materials fee: $65 per semester.  These are materials I create so that you don’t have to purchase a textbook (language textbooks are $300- $400 for one year of curriculum).

Total for the semester, per student (28 classes):  $616 tuition + materials and admin fees = $791

What goes into the cost per class session?  

1) the 50-minute instructional time itself

2) the lesson preparation time (planning, creating text materials and slides for the class) taking place outside of the class, and

3) all of the many costs described below:

For those who do not have first-hand experience with small business ownership, it might be helpful to know about the multiple costs that factor into the session fees.

Small business owners pay:

– all of our own health insurance, dental and vision insurance, retirement contributions (please note, we do not get benefits, paid sick days or vacation days, etc. as one would with an employer!)

– taxes on all revenue “twice” – both as an individual, and as a business.  We pay city taxes, school taxes, state taxes, and federal taxes, and in addition pay other taxes ourselves which an employer would otherwise pay, such as Social Security tax (an additional ~ 13%, at last look).   Taxes are actually a significant portion of the session fee that students pay.

– hundreds of dollars per year for business licenses and fees to the city/county and to the State of Kentucky

– hundreds of dollars per year for (complicated!) tax preparation fees / accountant fees, for small business tax filing

– digital expenses: thousands of dollars per year – e.g., Zoom Pro subscription, high speed internet, maintaining electronic equipment, website hosting fees, webmaster fees, payment processing fees, etc.

– for teachers like myself owning a small business: continuing education courses related to French, language pedagogy, etc. so that we stay up to date with current best-practice models for teaching.

As you might see, a large portion (if not the majority) of the session fees go to expenses, versus a take-home salary.  Additionally, before starting Learn with Laura LLC, I spent thousands of hours learning and studying French, taking coursework, gaining hands-on training in language pedagogy, serving as a graduate Teaching Assistant, and living in French-speaking places.  I also spent thousands of dollars in tuition and education costs. This truly is a labor of love – I teach because I love the French language, French culture, and I love helping students learn!  Thank you for supporting small businesses!
