Mission:
The mission of French for Home Schoolers is to for home-schooled students to have the opportunity to:
- receive high quality French instruction and learn to speak and understand French
- gain a solid understanding of French culture ( just as important as understanding the linguistic aspects of a language, and cultural competence is a major focus of university classes today
- learn independent study skills in preparation for future academics at the university level
- have fun and experience the joy of learning another language!
Semester-by-semester schedule:
The entire French for Homeschoolers program is designed to be equivalent to four years of high school French, or four semesters of college French. Most high school language programs meet 5x/week, most university language courses meet 4x/week.
Semester 1: Foundations of French (2x/week)
In this course, students are introduced to foundational language concepts, cultural learning. and accurate pronunciation. The frequency of 3x/week is a little less than a high school or university class so that students can ease into learning another language. The aim is to build interest in French, confidence and joy in learning another language, and to gain emerging cultural competence.
The aim of the next series of courses, French 1A-3B (below), is to prepare students to reach intermediate to advanced conversational language skills, improve English vocabulary alongside learning French, and take college language entrance exams (should they wish).
Just as important, students will gain valuable cultural competence, develop an enthusiasm for language learning (and learning in general!), and gain the study skills necessary to succeed in college.
Semester 2: French 1A (3x/week)
Semester 3: French 1B (3x/week)
Semester 4: French 2A (4x/week)
Semester 5: French 2B (4x/week)
Semester 6: French 3A (4x/week)
Semester 7: French 3B(4x/week)
For students who start the program early and therefore have an additional year remaining before they start college, the French for Homeschoolers program continues with a two semesters of French at advanced levels:
Semester 8: French 4A
Semester 9: French 4B
